Description

Stunning Variegated Philodendron Bipennifolium

Philodendron Bipennifolium Variegated is a show-stopping aroid known for its large, deeply lobed leaves with unique variegation patterns in cream and green. Its leaves resemble the shape of a horse’s head, making it a favourite among rare plant collectors.

This plant flourishes best in bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sun that can scorch its variegated leaves. It enjoys warm and humid environments, ideally between 18°C to 26°C, with humidity levels above 60%.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Maintaining consistent moisture is crucial. Water when the top few centimetres of soil dry out, but be careful to avoid waterlogging as root rot is a common issue. A well-draining substrate composed of coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, and worm castings (10-15%) will support healthy root growth and nutrient uptake.

The feeding routine should include a balanced liquid fertiliser applied monthly in spring and summer, tapering off in cooler months. Pruning damaged or leggy growth encourages bushier, healthier plants.

Propagation and Common Care Tips

Propagation is achieved most successfully through stem cuttings with nodes. Place cuttings in water or moist substrate to root. Common pests include spider mites and mealybugs, which respond well to neem oil or insecticidal soap widely available in South Africa.

Allowing good airflow and maintaining steady humidity levels helps prevent pest and fungal problems. Use fungicides like funginex as necessary.

Client Plant Care Guide (Philodendron Bipennifolium Variegated)

  • Sunlight: Prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to stop leaf burn.
  • Water: Only water when the top 3-4 cm of soil is dry. Avoid watering too much.
  • Potting Medium: Use well-draining mix with coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, and some worm castings (10-15%).
  • Temperature: Best kept in 18°C to 26°C. Do not expose to cold below 15°C.
  • Humidity: Likes high humidity (60%+). Mist or use a humidifier if air is dry.
  • Water Quality: Tap water is usually fine but if borehole water is used, ensure it has low salts. Distilled or filtered water preferred if water quality is poor.
  • Propagation: Cut a healthy stem with a node, root in water or damp soil till roots form.
