The Corpuscularia Lehmannii Succulent, also known as Ice Plant, is a standout succulent native to South Africa. It features fleshy, triangular grey-green leaves that give it a unique geometric look. Bright yellow, daisy-like flowers bloom in spring and winter, adding a splash of colour to any garden or indoor collection.
Growing Conditions and Care
This succulent thrives in full sun, although it tolerates some partial shade, especially in very hot climates. Bright sunlight brings out its signature silvery tones and encourages vibrant flowers. It requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Use a cactus or succulent soil mix with added perlite for aeration and drainage. Including worm castings up to 10% provides nutrients without affecting drainage.
Watering should follow the soak-and-dry method: saturate the soil then wait for it to dry completely before watering again. Overwatering causes common problems like root rot and fungal infections. Keep an eye on soil moisture and avoid soggy conditions.
Temperature, Feeding and Propagation
This plant loves warm temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. Avoid frost as it is sensitive to temperatures below 5°C. Humidity can range from dry to moderate, typical of subtropical areas.
Feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer. Pruning involves removing dead or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth and maintain a neat appearance. You can easily propagate Corpuscularia Lehmannii using stem cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous for a few days before planting them in well-draining soil. Roots develop within weeks, making propagation accessible even for beginners.
Pests and Diseases
Scale insects are the main pests to watch out for. Treat infestations early with neem oil or diluted alcohol wipes. Overwatering and poor airflow increase the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot. To combat these, prune affected leaves and apply fungicides as necessary, following label instructions carefully.
