Reclaimed Clay Pot by Fran Stassen
Sustainable Craftsmanship
This unique reclaimed clay pot is handcrafted by Fran Stassen, a skilled potter based in East London, South Africa. Fran uses recycled clay scraps that she reclaims through an eco-friendly process. By doing so, she helps reduce waste and promotes sustainability in her craft. This commitment makes each pot a conscious choice for eco-friendly gardeners.
Reclaiming Clay Process
The process starts by soaking used clay trimmings in water until they break down into a slurry. Then, Fran dries the mixture until it reaches a workable consistency. Next, she wedges the clay carefully to remove air bubbles and restore its plasticity. This reclaimed clay is then shaped and kiln fired. As a result, each pot carries a unique character from its reclaimed origins.
Unique Colour and Texture
Initially, the wet clay appears as a rich chocolate brown. However, after firing, it changes to a lighter shade accented with white speckles. The pot features a glossy glazed interior, including a glazed rim approximately 1cm wide on the top outside edge. Meanwhile, the rest of the pot remains unglazed, boasting an earthy, natural matte finish. This mix of textures adds to the pot’s charm and individuality.
Designed for Plants
This pot does not have drainage holes. Therefore, it suits small plants such as phalaenopsis orchids, young aroids, begonias, or succulents best. You can simply place your plant inside its nursery pot within this showpiece pot. This arrangement ensures easy watering and plant mobility.
