Keep the central tank filled with low-mineral water, ideally rainwater or borehole water with a pH around 5.7. Flush the cup every few weeks to prevent stagnation and algae build-up. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.
Feeding and Maintenance
Feeding is straightforward. Use a urea-free orchid fertiliser at quarter strength once a month during spring and summer. Apply directly to the medium or as a light foliar mist. Avoid fertilising the cup, as this can lead to algae growth and leaf burn. Rotate the plant monthly for even exposure and colour development.
Propagation and Pest Control
Propagation is reliable through pups. After flowering, the mother plant produces offsets that can be separated once they reach one-third to half its size and show root development. Pot pups into the same mix and maintain humidity with good ventilation to harden off successfully.
Pests are rare but may include mealybug or scale in leaf axils. Treat early with neem oil or horticultural soap. For fungal issues, improve drainage and use copper-based fungicides.
