Description
Vibrant Colour and Compact Form
Neoregelia chlorosticta bromeliad delivers bold colour and texture in a compact, easy-care rosette. This striking tank bromeliad stores water in its central cup and responds beautifully to bright, indirect light with vivid leaf markings and a glossy finish. In East London’s subtropical climate, it thrives with strong airflow, gentle morning sun, and protection from harsh midday rays.
Ideal Light and Temperature
Perfect for indoor growing, especially in north-east facing spaces like your hot house bar, Neoregelia chlorosticta enjoys winter sunlight streaming in from late morning. During midsummer, when temperatures inside can reach 30–33°C, it benefits from added shade cloth and open doors to increase airflow and reduce heat stress. This helps prevent leaf scorch and keeps the plant vibrant.
Watering and Substrate Needs
The root system prefers an airy, fast-draining mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite, and coco chips to maintain oxygenation and moisture balance. Keep the central tank filled with low-mineral water, ideally rainwater or borehole water with a pH around 5.7. Flush the cup every few weeks to prevent stagnation and algae build-up. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot.
Feeding and Maintenance
Feeding is straightforward. Use a urea-free orchid fertiliser at quarter strength once a month during spring and summer. Apply directly to the medium or as a light foliar mist. Avoid fertilising the cup, as this can lead to algae growth and leaf burn. Rotate the plant monthly for even exposure and colour development.
Propagation and Pest Control
Propagation is reliable through pups. After flowering, the mother plant produces offsets that can be separated once they reach one-third to half its size and show root development. Pot pups into the same mix and maintain humidity with good ventilation to harden off successfully.
Pests are rare but may include mealybug or scale in leaf axils. Treat early with neem oil or horticultural soap. For fungal issues, improve drainage and use copper-based fungicides. With regular care and airflow, Neoregelia chlorosticta bromeliad remains a resilient, eye-catching addition to any collection.
