Description

Begonia McLaughlin Rex is a stunning tropical aroid treasured for its richly coloured foliage and intricate leaf patterns. This remarkable plant belongs to the Rex Begonia group, known for producing dramatic shades of deep purple, burgundy, and dark green often veined or splashed with lighter tones. Because of its vibrant and unique leaves, it makes a show-stopping specimen for indoor plant collections and terrariums.

Growing Conditions

The Begonia McLaughlin Rex thrives in bright, indirect light. This lighting ensures the leaves retain their stunning colours and prevents sunburn, which can dull the vibrancy. However, direct sunlight should be avoided, especially during the hot mid-summer days. Position your plant near east or north-facing windows with filtered light, or place it in a well-lit room to keep it healthy and colourful.

Watering and Soil

Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid saturation, which can lead to root rot. Water the plant when the top 2 to 3 cm of the soil become dry. Use warm water to prevent shocking the roots, and avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew, to which Rex begonias can be prone. The ideal soil is well-draining and airy, consisting of peat moss or coco coir mixed with perlite and orchid bark. Adding up to 10% worm castings provides additional nutrients and improves soil microbiology.

Temperature and Humidity

This Begonia thrives in moderate temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 24°C. It is sensitive to cold and should be protected from drafts and temperatures below 15°C that can cause leaf yellowing and drop. High humidity above 60% significantly benefits the plant by preventing leaf edges from crisping and maintaining overall leaf health. Humidity can be increased by placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water or using a humidifier.

Feeding and Maintenance

Feed Begonia McLaughlin Rex with a balanced, diluted fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during its growing season from spring through early autumn. Prune dead or yellowing foliage regularly to encourage denser and healthier growth. Removing spent leaves also reduces the risk of fungal infections.

Propagation

Propagate this variety by stem or leaf cuttings placed on moist substrate in a warm, humid environment. Roots typically develop in 3 to 4 weeks, allowing easy production of more plants for Shrubs4Life’s nursery.

Pest and Disease Management

Common pests include aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, and powdery mildew fungi. Neem oil or Efekto Garden Gun insecticide effectively controls these insects. Early treatment of fungal issues with Efekto Kumulus WG prevents serious damage.

Water Quality

Begonia McLaughlin Rex tolerates borehole water at pH 5.7 but thrives best when watered with rain or distilled water. These water types prevent salt build-up and keep roots healthy for vibrant foliage.
