Description

Begonia Etna Rex is an exquisite member of the Rex Begonia group, treasured for its bold and colourful variegated leaves. The foliage displays deep reds, purples, and almost black hues interlaced with intricate patterns, creating an eye-catching display. This plant grows compactly, making it an ideal choice for indoor gardening.

Growing Conditions

This Begonia requires bright, indirect light or dappled shade, especially to protect its delicate, colorful leaves from direct sun damage. It prefers a rich, well-draining potting mix combining peat or coco coir with perlite and orchid bark. Incorporating up to 10% worm castings can improve nutrient availability.

Temperature and Humidity

Begonia Etna Rex flourishes in temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. It demands high humidity above 60% for the best growth and to keep its leaves vibrant. Ensure good airflow around the plant to minimise fungal disease risk. Temperatures below 15°C can cause damage.

Feeding and Maintenance

Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season to maintain health and colour. Regularly prune to remove dead or yellowing leaves and deadhead flowers to encourage fresh blooms and new growth.

Propagation

For production, propagate Begonia Etna Rex from leaf or stem cuttings. Place cuttings on moist substrate such as sphagnum moss or peat mix and keep in a warm, humid area. Roots typically develop within 3–4 weeks, allowing the new plants to be potted and grown on.

Pest and Disease Control

Begonia Etna Rex can suffer from powdery mildew and pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Use Neem oil or Efekto Garden Gun insecticide to manage pests. For fungal infections, apply Efekto Kumulus WG fungicide timely and avoid overwatering to reduce disease incidence.

Water Preferences

The plant tolerates watering with borehole water at pH 5.7 but favours rainwater or distilled water to prevent mineral salt build-up that can harm roots and leaves. Maintain evenly moist soil while avoiding saturation.
