Description

Euphorbia Ferox, commonly known as Spiny Euphorbia or Giant Pincushion Euphorbia, is a striking succulent native to South Africa. It features robust, chunky stems covered with formidable, needle-sharp spines that protect it in its natural arid habitat. This distinctive succulent thrives in sunny, dry conditions, making it a perfect candidate for succulent collections across South Africa’s sub-tropical regions.

Growing Conditions

Euphorbia Ferox flourishes in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its vibrant growth and spine health. It tolerates high temperatures well and thrives in warm environments ranging from 18°C to 30°C. However, it is sensitive to frost and must be protected from temperatures below 10°C. Good airflow is essential to prevent fungal infections and maintain strong plant health in humid subtropical climates.

Watering and Soil

This succulent is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common cause of root rot, so watering sparingly is crucial. In summer, water approximately every two weeks, reducing frequency in cooler or dormant months. Euphorbia Ferox requires extremely well-draining soil, such as a succulent or cactus mix blended with coarse sand or perlite. Adding 10-15% worm castings helps supply organic nutrients without retaining excess moisture.

Feeding and Maintenance

During its active growing season, feed Euphorbia Ferox sparingly with a diluted succulent fertiliser every four to six weeks. Avoid fertilising during its winter dormancy period. Prune minimally by removing dead or damaged stems, taking care to wear gloves due to its sharp spines.

Propagation

You can propagate Euphorbia Ferox by stem cuttings. After cutting, allow the cuttings to dry and callous for several days before planting in a dry, well-draining substrate. Offsets also occasionally form and can be replanted separately.

Common Problems and Pest Control

Watch for overwatering and poor drainage, which lead to root rot. Fungal infections can develop in high humidity and poor airflow; ensure good ventilation. Mealybugs and scale insects sometimes infest the plant and respond well to neem oil or insecticidal soap, which are widely available in South Africa.

Water pH and Source

Euphorbia Ferox tolerates borehole water with a pH of 5.7 but prefers neutral to slightly acidic water. Tap water is usually suitable. Distilled water is unnecessary unless tap water is very hard or contains high salt levels.
